Free Open Air Theatre….And More!
Where can you sit out and get some fresh air and be entertained for FREE? Well, actually, right here in NYC there are quite places!
Recently I was bike riding along the East River and saw folks filing in to an open air theatre at the East River Park (just north of the Manhattan Bridge). I quickly found out that they were getting ready to watch a performance of Hamlet. It was a warm summer night, and I couldn’t think of a better place to check out a show. The theatre overlooks the east river, and has impressive views of the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges. You can’t get more NY than that! And, the best thing? It’s all FREE. Hamlet is just one of many theatre performances being put on this summer, and the East River park is only one of many venues that will host performances all summer long.
The City Parks Foundation is to be thanked for bringing theatre, dance, and other performing arts to neighborhoods throughout the city. They are the only independent, nonprofit organization to offer programming in parks throughout the five boroughs of New York City, entertaining thousands of New Yorkers all summer long.
