In the famous words of Albert Einstein, “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.”

We are in tough economic times. We all know that. Yet, what most don’t realize is that there is opportunity within this recession. Opportunity that is centered around your most valuable asset….YOU.  It just may be the perfect time to develop a side hustle.

What you may ask is your side hustle? Well, think about these questions: What do YOU bring to the table? What is your passion?  What drives you in the morning?  What would you do in life even if no one ever paid you a dime? This, my friend is your side hustle… and now is the time to develop it. Now is the time to hone in on what it is you love and the skills that you have, and start optimizing. This is the time to maximize your human capital and all skill and talent you hold. Nobody can do you- better than you!

The pillars of our economy are not Fortune 500 companies, but small businesses who collectively hire more people than any huge company out there.  Many are distressed… which means bargains for consumers… and a ripe opportunity for you. Evaluate what is in your community, where there is a need,  and offer up your services.  Remember though, you must be good at what you do. Even if you can undercut the competition and offer the work for 90 percent off, if you’re not doing a good job, it doesn’t matter. Companies need to get the job done, but not at the risk of losing even more business.

If you can’t get paid for your services, think about working for free. Yes, I said for FREE.  I know that you might be saying, “Uhhhhh, aren’t we in business to make money?”  Of course, BUT NEVER DESPISE THE DAY OF SMALL BEGINNINGS!  Small beginnings can often lead to big things. Volunteering your services in the industry you love, can help you gain valuable experience, added expertise, and build up the networks needed to succeed. You may not be getting paid out immediately, but you are investing in yourself and your future business, and the potential payoff could be phenomenal.

The good news is that history has shown us that economic downturns always turn back around.  Now just may be the perfect time to position yourself and find your passion. So again I repeat:  what void can you and your passion fill in this economic landscape?  You may be surprised at how your passion can help you hustle up some extra change, or a future full of new wealth.
