Feeling Sluggish? Get Re-Energized For Good.

tired holidayHas the hustle and bustle of the holiday season already got you feeling drained? Are the winter blues setting in a bit early? Do you get tired easily? Does your mind whirl, but you can’t get your body off the couch? Are you gaining weight or just feeling slower and heavier?

Low energy or fatigue can accompany many hormonal imbalances. This is because hormones that regulate your menstrual cycle are part of your larger endocrine system, which controls your overall metabolism. When there’s a kink in the system, you might feel like a wind up toy slowly winding down to a halt.

The good news is that low energy can clear up quickly once you figure out your metabolism boosters. What works for someone else might not work for you. A lot depends on your hormonal imbalance, body type and lifestyle. So experiment. Be curious and playful. Listen to your body. Try some of these natural remedies and see which ones work. Soon the bounce will be back in your step!

Natural Metabolism Boosting Remedies:

Sea Vegetables: Your thyroid regulates many endocrine functions. If thyroid is low, you can feel low all over, with fatigue, depression, and weight gain. You can boost thyroid with the natural iodine found in sea vegetables, particularly kelp. Kelp flakes come in condiment shakers. Simply use them as a replacement for salt.

Blackstrap Molasses: If you have heavy periods, endometriosis or fibroids, you could be low in iron, especially if you are vegetarian. A tasty, natural iron (and calcium) supplement is blackstrap molasses. Try a teaspoon a day for two weeks and see how you feel. (Stop if it makes you constipated.)

Water: You’d be amazed how many people feel spacey and exhausted all day from dehydration. Without enough water your body can’t convert nutrition into energy. If you aren’t getting 8 glasses a day, put yourself on a water schedule: 2 glasses in the morning, and then 2 glasses 20 minutes before each meal or 30 minutes after each meal, whichever feels better.

Brown Rice: If your diet is high in refined foods, sugar, or coffee, your endocrine system is probably tapped out from its daily glucose roller coaster. Choose foods, like brown rice and other whole grains, that digest slowly, keep your blood sugar stable, and give you a sustained energy burn throughout the day.

Protein: If brown rice and other whole grains make you feel even more tired, then your metabolism might get a better boost from more healthy protein: beans, tofu, lentils, organic chicken or fresh fish.

Experiment to see how much you need to feel great.
