We’re nearing the end of the work week, and now is probably the time that you are craving sleep more than ever. But aside from being worn down from the day to day, we wanted check in on how your sleep is going. Afterall, sleeping issues are much more common in women than in men. And why is that? Because of our hormones, of course!
What you don’t know about your hormones can be costing you precious hours of sleep, so let us introduce you to 2 key issues that could be affecting your sleep:
1. Stress & the Cortisol Response: Did you know that a woman’s stress response requires more recovery time than a man’s? Chronic stress causes your adrenal glands to secrete lots of adrenaline and cortisol, preparing you for the fight or flight response. Cortisol sends the signal for your cells to release stored sugar into your blood stream, giving your body a jolt. This becomes problematic for your sleep when cortisol levels are elevated in the evening hours!
2. Estrogen Dominance: As you’ve heard in our newsletters before, excess estrogen in your system, in conjunction with low progesterone, can cause a whole range of issues from menstrual difficulties, to breast tenderness and cysts, to, alas, sleep disturbances. Too much estrogen in your system can be a result of mismanaged blood sugar, xenoestrogens from plastics and the environment, and a stagnant liver that is unable to keep up with ridding all of this from your system
What’s girl to do? Here’s a few ways to get started in supporting your hormonal flow and getting back those Zs!
- Cleanse that liver! Eliminate excess estrogen and cortisol from your system with a gentle and supportive cleanse to kick-start your liver in the detoxification process. Read on for details about our annual Spring Cleanse.
- Calm those nerves! Reduce your stress response and support your adrenal glands through medicinal foods, supplements, and daily lifestyle practices. What does that mean? We outline it all for you as an integrated part of our 5-step protocol, but here are some tips to get you started: keep up with your yoga class, stock up on sea veggies, black sesame seeds and other adrenal-supportive foods, and find a supplement/herb protocol that works for you.
p.s. If you’re looking for additional ways for reducing stress, we’re a huge fan of Dr. Roberta Lee and her new book The Superstress Solution.
